I am directed to enquire whether the Formose
Government grants a bounty on the production of sugar in that
island, and if so, whether such bounty is only payable on
Formosan sugar exported to Japan and not on that exported to other markets, and whether the bounty will be discontinued at some date in next year. It is understood that an export duty on sugar of 50 or 55 sen per picul, depending on quality, hither- -to levied on sugers exported to countries other than Japan, has been discontinued as from the 1st. instant, and I shall be
glad to learn whether this is 80.
